Troy women’s basketball picked 2nd in Sun Belt Conference

Troy was picked second behind defending champion James Madison in Sun Belt Conference women’s basketball preseason voting by league coaches announced Monday.

Chanda Rigby’s Trojans, who went 17-13 a year ago, received three first-place votes and 177 poll points. JMU was nine points ahead at 186, and received nine first-place votes. Southern Miss (159 points) and Georgia Southern (131) got one first-place vote each.

Louisiana (117) was picked sixth, followed by Texas State (116), Arkansas State (87), Marshall (85), Coastal Carolina (72), Louisiana-Monroe (71), Appalachian State (54), Georgia State (46) and South Alabama (20). The Jaguars are entering their first season under coach Yolisha Jackson.

Troy guard Makayia Hallmon was chosen first-team All-Sun Belt in the preseason, joining Southern Miss’ Domonique Davis (the preseason Player of the Year), Georgia Southern’s Terren Ward, Arkansas State’s Izzy Higginbotham and Marshall’s Roshala Scott. Hallmon, a senior from Coushatta, La., averaged a team-best 15 points per game for the Trojans last season.

Troy had two players chosen for the second team: forwards Ja’Mia Hollings and Tai’Sheka Porchia. Hollings — a senior from West Point, Miss. — averaged 12.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per game last season, while Porchia — a senior from Camden, Ark. — put up 12.4 and 7.2.

South Alabama guard Kelsey Thompson was chosen to the third team. The sophomore from Mobile — last season’s Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year — averaged 10.7 points and 4.2 rebounds per game in 2022-23. Other second-team members were James Madison guard Peyton McDaniel, Louisiana guard Lanay Wheaton and James Madison center Kseniia Kozlova. Also picked to the third team were Coastal Carolina guard Deaja Richardson, Appalachian State guard Emily Carver, Georgia State guard Mikyla Tolivert and Louisiana-Monroe guard Daisha “Nunu” Bradford, a Mobile native.
